Report from Terry Schultz of Chester County Move to Impeach:

I was able to arrange a conference call back in July with Jim Gerlach (R-PA), 2 of our members and me.  I followed up the call with a letter in August. (He told us that he was against impeachment but then voted to send the resolution to the Judiciary Committee. I wrote to him and thanked him for that.)

Letter from Congressman Gerlach:

Thanks for you August 22nd correspondence regarding your continuing support for H. Res. 333.  I appreciate your comments, but as I indicated in our July conference call, I do not support this resolution nor do I think there is any evidence that President Bush or Vice President Cheney have committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" that serve as a justification for their impeachments.

On the issue of use of force against Iran, I certainly advocate the use of diplomatic and economic pressure to try to change the Iranian government's course of action relative to the development of nuclear technology capability and their efforts to disrupt Coalition activity in Iraq.  There is no question that Iran is trying to influence activities in Iraq through supplying weaponry and advisors to Al Qaeda and sectarian groups and I point you to General Petraeus' recent Congressional testimony as well as recent National Intelligence Estimate findings, to highlight these efforts.  Nonetheless, economic efforts to isolate Iran through minimizing their access to international financial resources may (and hopefully) persuade the Iranian government to cease and desist from nuclear technology development, Iraq involvement, and the supplying and training of terrorist organizations.  We should all hope that economic and diplomatic efforts are successful, although we collectively do not have a crystal ball to know how far and how extreme the Iranian government will go in pursuing an agenda of violence and hate.

Again, thank you very much for your letter.

With kind regards, I am

Sincerely,

Jim Gerlach

Member of Congress
