Rep. John Linder (R-GA)

From Rep. John Linder:

Thank you for contacting me to express your thoughts on Congress forcing the resignation of Vice President Richard B. Cheney. I appreciate hearing from you. Introduced by Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) on November 6, 2007, H.Res. 799 would impeach Vice President Cheney of high crimes and misdemeanors. On the same day, the House voted in a 218-194 roll call vote to refer this resolution to the House Committee on the Judiciary, where it currently awaits further consideration. I voted against referring this ridiculous proposal to committee. Frankly, I wanted the full House to vote on this bill, so that the American people can see for themselves where Congress stands on this measure. For my part, I would have opposed it vigorously.

Should evidence be presented that any elected official, regardless of position or party affiliation, knowingly committed treason, received bribes, or violated any other law or the public's trust falling under the Article II, Section 4 definition of "high Crimes and Misdemeanors," I could absolutely support Congressional action. However, as no credible evidence suggesting that Vice President Cheney committed any of these offenses has been presented to the Congress, I believe any calls for either a forced resignation or impeachment are, in their entirety, political in nature.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to call on me if I may be of assistance in the future.
