We Went to Rep. Bobby Scott's Office Once Again

By Andrea Miller

I joined the impeachment rally yesterday at Bobby Scott's office; it was excellent and there were about 15 people. Everyone at the rally went upstairs to Bobby Scott's office and Chris Dorsey spoke eloquently about the need for impeachment and how the Cheney/Bush impeachment has nothing to do with partisanship. Most notably we had the Ron Paul Virginia coordinator with us (though the office did not know about this affiliation). Allan added that we are recruiting new blood for Congress that will support impeachment as the will of the people. He told the staffer that there are new candidates in the 8th, 1st and 10th; I added that I was running in the 4th.

I think this double-tack may help to have an impact. As new people step up to run, this should encourage the old guard to carefully consider where they stand with their constiuency and are they out of touch. Bobby Scott's office is in a predominantly African-American neighborhood and we got honks for impeachment from everyone driving by including police and fire folks driving official vehicles.

I think we need to now have the "suits" approach Bobby Scott as well as the extreme activists. We need to show support in the movement from all walks of life (in short everybody that votes for Bobby Scott -- or the new candidate that more closely reflects their political goals and ideals.)

Report from Rain Burroughs: We have held a honk to impeach event outside of Bobby Scott’s office in Richmond VA for four months every Friday.  Formally asked for an appt over two months ago and that day I was told I’d be called by the end of the day.  No call.  Many msgs left with scheduler in DC, Larry Dillard, a pleasant enough fellow.  At recent Friday event, we went, as usual to the office after much honking.  Asked a Newport News staffer filling in for a recently quit staffer, to call Larry and ask him why he hasn’t called back re appointment request.  Did get a call.  So busy.  Only there T,W, Th, etc.  What are your concerns again?  Asked him to go to legislative aide David Dailey for formal questions we would like answered.  We had to resend to DC what Richmond office said they would fax to DC in order to not be delayed for snail mail anthrax precautions.

So now we are expecting to have a meeting sometime after mid Jan, according to scheduler.  I asked him if he had made an effort to put us on the schedule two months ago when I first contacted him.  Can not fairly describe his answer because it made no sense to me, and logic works in my brain better than excuses.  I mentioned that if we had been taken seriously, we would have already been met with, not two months later starting from scratch.  Oh yeah, but we have been so busy.  Reiterated that a bunch of Richmonders are ready to travel the two hours to DC at very little notice to be heard and question.  You’ll probably have to wait and may not be heard at all was the response.

So it goes, but we will not give up.

July 27, 2007, ImpeachForPeace. We met with Rep. Bobby Scott next. Rep. Scott spoke with us for about an hour, and even then practically had to be dragged away by his staffers once he was late for his next appointment. David Swanson of After Downing Street describes the meeting: "I like debating Scott because he starts with most of the same premises I do but ends up in a totally different place… He maintains that there does not yet exist solid evidence for impeachment, and that investigations will uncover such evidence faster if they are not called impeachment investigations. He thinks that calling them impeachment investigations will prevent the Democrats from joining with the Republicans to pass good legislation. And he's concerned that joining the 15 heroes now cosponsoring articles of impeachment against Dick Cheney would 'marginalize' him."
