Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-NJ)

Nov. 28 - By Diane Lawrence, http://www.FloridaImpeach.org

Today was terrific. Ten active Coalition members showed up, most of us wearing Impeach tee-shirts. This was on about 18 hrs. notice for a middle-of-the-day meeting. We passed out the flyers informing the mainly seniors present what Debbie's position is on impeachment.

I gave her staffer Lori a folder containing 1) Flyer showing that the party that impeaches wins the next election; 2) the 11/12 American Research Poll showing that 63% of Democrats favor impeachment of Cheney; and 3) 6 excerpts from the Constitution dealing with Impeachment.

In the Q & A Lori, who knew exactly who I was having met her when I sat in the lobby of Aventura City Hall reading the Constitution aloud, was the person going around with the mike and she brought the mike to me. I held up my pocket size Constitution and told Debbie that she took an oath to defend the Constitution and that she is not doing that. Another Coalition member was called on and said, "Debbie, you said that the President lied us into a war; isn't that an impeachable offense?" Two other people who were not in our group asked great questions about impeachment. The audience was very receptive with the exception of the usual political lackeys who know Debbie from campaigns.

Nicole Sandler was there, but I don't know if she tape recorded the session. After the Q & A, the usual crowd went up to the podium and Bonnie Daniels made a number of points to her. At least one other member got in a few good points. Nicole Sandler talked to her at length. I think a lot of their conversation had to do with the day that Debbie was on air with both Nicole and Ed Schultz. Debbie was clearly uncomfortable with the discussion on impeachment and her excuses are looking less and less credible, especially with the Plame-connected treason being common knowledge. I wish there had been a recording because I think she went so far at one point as to imply that perhaps the offenses weren't impeachable. It was very frustrating listening to her.

Nov. 24 -  From South Florida Impeachment Coalition :  She’s on judiciary committee, but Pelosi put her there.  She has expressed her god-awful excuses for not impeaching:  too divisive, have other legislation to pass.  Only thing that will change her mind (despite hundreds of irate phone calls) is if Pelosi changes her mind).

Letter to constituent:

Dear Ms.          ,

Knowing of your interest in the Bush Administration and your contact with our office, I want to keep you up to date on the critical important matters facing our nation.

When President Bush took us into war more than four years ago, he promised the American people a quick and easy victory. While the President has repeatedly asked us to stay the course, every American fatality, every wounded service member, and every American tax dollar spent reminds us of his utter failure to deliver on that promise.  Since the Administration's escalation plan six months ago, more than 28,000 troops have been sent to Iraq, 600 more U.S. soldiers have died, and more than 3,000 troops have been wounded. The Iraqi government has failed to reach any of the benchmarks set forth by the President in January, and violence is at an all-time high. The Iraq Study Group's conclusion that the "situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating" is clearly corroborated by the worsening situation on the ground.

As a result, more American troops have been placed in the middle of a civil war, our overextended military has been further strained, and resources that are necessary to keep Americans safe at home have been jeopardized because of the huge financial commitment to the war and the rebuilding effort. Our soldiers, who have served bravely and heroically, are being forced to serve multiple or extended tours of duty to maintain a strategy that has clearly failed.

A new direction in Iraq is long overdue. On July 13, 2007, I voted for H.R. 2956, the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act. This bill passed in the House of Representatives and is awaiting consideration in Senate. The legislation requires that redeployment begin within 120 days of enactment and culminate by April 1, 2008. Should the Senate vote in favor of H.R. 2956, responsibility will fall to the President to sign the bill into law.

In the past, the President has demonstrated blatant disregard for the will of the American people by vetoing legislation that would finally take us in a new direction in Iraq. H.R. 2956, is consistent with the advice of military and foreign policy experts, provides the hope for steering our nation toward a more sensible and safer future. A veto in this case would be nothing more than another failure in a long list of failures when it comes to President Bush's Iraq policy.

I understand there have been calls for Congress to impeach the President and members of the Administration over the terrible mismanagement of the war. The impeachment process is divisive and costly, and would further distract from the other important issues confronting the American people, including ending the war. Rather than allow the impeachment issue to deplete more of our time and resources, I believe we should concentrate our efforts instead on ending the war, providing healthcare to our veterans, and restoring domestic priorities for all Americans.

Again, thank you for contacting my office, and please do not hesitate to do so again regarding this or any other matter. I will keep your concerns in mind and continue to keep you updated on this and other pressing issues of the 110th Congress. I also invite you to visit my Web site and signup to receive my newsletter at www.house.gov/schultz for additional information and legislative issue updates.

Sincerely,

Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Member of Congress

Nov. 10 - This just in, a Wasserman Schultz constituent emailed to say:  "The best news in the whole world is that Cong. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is under siege by her formerly faithful constituents over her bad explanation for not impeaching on two talk shows Wednesday.  Consequently, she cancelled a speaking engagement before a well-established Democratic group.  I am a member.  Since the older women in the club do not listen to progressive radio, they didn’t have a clue as to why she was cancelling.  I informed them in an email.  I believe she is in the fetal position because of the many, many phone calls she is getting about impeachment.  It’s a beautiful thing."

Nov. 8 - Rep. Wasserman Schultz and Her Unyielding Position on Impeachment

_______________________

November 6, 2007

Release by Rep. Wasserman Schultz (Washington, DC)  --  “Impeachment is the most severe action that the Congress can take against the Executive Branch and the consideration of articles of impeachment must not be taken lightly. The charges outlined in H.Res. 333 calling for the impeachment of Vice-President Cheney are serious and deserve more than an hour of debate without the ability to present evidence. As such, I have voted to refer this resolution to the House Judiciary Committee so that the charges outlined can be heard and debated.

“Today, Congress also overrode the President’s veto of the Water Resources Development Act, which among other things authorizes $2 billion for Everglades restoration as well as hurricane recovery and beach erosion funds. We are currently fighting to pass –against the President’s objections and his veto, legislation that would provide health insurance for an additional 3.5 million American children, 230,000 more insured children in Florida alone. Working to end the War in Iraq, expanding SCHIP, passing the first increase in the minimum wage in 10 years, passing the largest veterans health care increase in the 77-year history of the VA, and passing a roughly $1 billion increase in Everglades funding, all of these are issues that Congress has been addressing since the Democratic-led 110th Congress began in January.”

“Impeachment is a lengthy process which would divide Congress and this nation even more deeply than we are divided right now. Referring this resolution to the House Judiciary Committee is the constitutionally appropriate process that should be pursued.”

July 27, 2007, ImpeachforPeace. We met with Mr. Jonathan Pyatt, Legislative Council for Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Mr. Pyatt welcomed us and made it clear that Rep. Wasserman-Schultz was sympathetic to our position, but was also afraid that impeachment would distract from implementing a variety of social programs, such as issues surrounding child health care. We reminded him of the importance of stopping the precedent set by this Administration and the power of the veto to prevent significant social change, suggesting that the best way to accomplish the Democratic agenda is through impeachment. Mr. Pyatt stated that Rep. Wasserman-Schultz is also concerned about ensuring that Democrats remain in power and gain the White House during the upcoming elections. We informed him of how previous impeachment attempts have favored the party pursuing them and discussed how the public perception of Democrats as unwilling to hold the Administration accountable was making them look weaker and hurting their chances in the elections. Ultimately, Mr. Pyatt stated that the Congresswoman's position was that we may get to the point where impeachment is required, but that this is not the time, and that we should talk about it again in September. We conveyed the urgency of the situation in light of the upcoming distraction in the form of the 2008 elections. We also presented Mr. Pyatt with "The Genius of Impeachment," and wrapped up by reminding him that it doesn't hurt to join the 15 supporters of H. Res. 333, to which he replied, "Point taken."

Pressure from constituents can hardly go awry at this point.
